What is Group Coaching?
Group coaching involves the application of coaching principles (such as active listening, meaningful questioning, designing actions, and managing accountability) to small groups of four to seven peer colleagues. It is conducted across multiple sessions which allow experience, relationships, and deep learning to unfold and evolve over time. Unlike team coaching, group members usually share no affiliation outside of the coaching group itself. They are unlikely to work together and in many cases work for entirely different business units or companies. Group members come together to engage a coach in service of individual learning and goals that can be personal and/or organizational in nature.
Groups can provide a fertile context for learning by easing isolation, spreading useful knowledge and ideas, and fostering critical reflection that leads to new ways of thinking about old problems. Group coaching offers participants a chance to observe and reflect on others’ experiences, share their own stories, and form strong bonds through shared experience.
Why do I need specialized training in order to do Group Coaching?
Working with groups requires an understanding of the complex social processes that define and shape the lives of groups. Coaching in a group setting is considerably more challenging than one-on-one coaching and presents different logistical, ethical, and developmental challenges for coaches. A group coach must create a potent learning environment for multiple people, must be able to process difficult feelings that arise for group members, and must create sufficient safety for group members to engage in the risks associated with learning.
The right knowledge can provide a useful road map through difficult territory. Having the ability to understand what is unfolding in front of you and how to respond can take some of the uncertainty out of group work and reduce the chances of inadvertently causing any harm.
Testimonials
“The program was excellent and Erek was masterful in establishing trust. Also, the blending of core theories and experience was the right balance for my different learning styles. The other aspect of the course I loved was experiencing group coaching as both a coach and participant. There was tremendous value in receiving feedback when it was my turn to lead, and observing other talented coaches run the group. I now have new ideas/strategies of incorporating group coaching in my practice.”
“I loved this course. I was debating between 2 different courses but very happy that I selected this one. The format - the smallish group rather than another larger online format - really gave me the opportunity to learn from others and practice. It was an excellent model of how a group should run in the future. Erek has excellent knowledge, humility and a great sense of humor, which I appreciate tremendously. Thank you!”
“Good balance of theory and practice. Great course. I feel much more confident about facilitating group coaching sessions and have been able to put the concepts into practice immediately.”
“The ability to learn about GC while also going through a GC experience was brilliant. It made the learning applicable in the moment, and easy to see why Erek's approach was impactful. I also very much appreciated the commitment, openness, thoughtfulness, and skills of the group members. Erek's screening clearly makes a difference, and helps me to see the importance of this step in putting together my own groups. And Erek is so knowledgeable and well grounded in theory and practice, while also being open to others' wisdom and contributions, patient, affirming, and authentic. This was a terrific experience all around - I'm so glad I took this course!”
“The group dynamic was amazing, Erek's mellow teaching style, and the theoretical knowledge gained.”
“I got so much more than I anticipated from my participation, and a renewed commitment to making Group Coaching an even bigger part of my practice! I've always seen so much potential for this work and am glad I've finally jumped in with both legs, body, head, heart, etc. Thank you Erek!!”
“I found Erek to be a great role model as a coach: he was always perceptive what the group needed (in terms of learning), he was fair with each member of the group, clear in his explanations and relatable as a fellow human! He held me as a member, and held the group with great sensitivity and humour. I will recommend the course and his programme to anyone interested in group coaching. Thanks Erek - you're an inspiration!”
