A while ago (sorry to admit it’s taken me so long to write this) I was tagged by Hueina Su at Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul to participate in a project called Simply Successful Secrets, started by Aaron Potts over at Today is That Day. I’m pretty sure I was tagged by Steli Efti at Supercoolschool as well, but it’s been so long that I can’t be certain!
Aaron’s rule was for each participant to write a new post “listing the top 5 to 10 things that you do almost every day that help you to be successful”.
Here goes:
- I listen to people. I wrote about it here. Listening is so rare in our society. I feel that people who really practice listening have a competitive advantage that contributes to their success, so I’m always practicing and developing my listening skills. I listen for what’s behind the words that people use, and what’s underneath the things that people say and do.
- I tell the truth. Particularly when the truth is difficult to tell, I’ve found that being truthful contributes to my success by cultivating trust and respect in my relationships with other people. Telling the truth is hard, especially when it makes you look bad, but the sound of the truth is distinct. People know when they’re hearing it, and they usually appreciate those who are willing to tell it.
- I smile as often as possible. It’s infectious. It makes other people smile. It makes me approachable and puts people at ease.
- I keep my word. I do what I say I’m going to, and if I know I can’t or won’t do something, I don’t say I’ll do it. This might seem obvious, but in practice, it can be very difficult. When I keep my word, it teaches people that they can depend on me.
- I give my best. This doesn’t mean that I always do it perfectly, or even correctly. It means that I do the best I possibly can. The focus is on giving my best in every moment, as opposed to producing a perfect result.
Those are the practices that come to mind at the moment. There may be others, but I can’t think of any right now. Thanks for tagging me!

Hi Erek!
Thanks for writing this! Some of the habits on your list (listening, telling the truth, etc) are indeed hard to practice, but are sooooo important in relationships, business, and everything. Thanks for sharing your secrets.
Warmly,
Hueina
Erek,
Many thanks for taking part in the Simply Successful Secrets project, and sorry that it took me so long to get over here and leave a comment on your list.
Listing, smiling, having integrity, doing your best, and being honest. If that isn’t a recipe for success, I don’t know what is!
Thanks again, Erek, and be sure to stop by the site on May 16th to see the master list of success secrets from all of the participants!
The Secrets Are Out
The project attracted 152 writers, each of whom contributed probably at least a thousand suggestions for success. Those figures speak to the power of the project, the willingness of writers to give and to share.
