Continued from Manifesting a Job You Actually Want (Step One)

The second step in manifesting a job you actually want is to create a conversation “for” what you want in a job.

By a conversation “for” something, I mean a conversation with a clearly distinguished purpose, that calls out for that purpose to be fulfilled.

For example, a conversation “for” brushing your teeth might talk about the lower instances of cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease found in regular “brushers”.

It might also address the benefits of good breath and a confident smile. If it’s a good conversation, it will cover several points that all make a case for the many benefits of brushing your teeth.

The purpose of the conversation may be to promote good oral hygiene by getting people to brush their teeth.

In the case of manifesting a job you actually want, your conversation “for” what you want in a job should also include many points, all aimed at creating a case for the existence and availability of the job you actually want.

That sounds way more complicated than it actually is. Let me try it again…

A conversation “for” what you want in a job should cover all the attributes of the job you actually want. It should also make a compelling case for the existence and availability of that job. That is to say, the conversation you create should convince me that A) the job actually exists, and B) it’s also available.

As you create this conversation, imagine that you could simply invent the job you’ve always wanted. Think about all the attributes, factors, and characteristics that could describe that job.

Take into account the tangible attributes: the exact type(s) of work you want to do, the length of your work-week, the compensation and benefits structure, the length of term, the work environment (office, desk, chair, location), as well as the intangible attributes: your experience of being at work, your experience of the people you work with/for.

Make a list incorporating all of these attributes/characteristics, line by line, so that you start to become very, very clear about exactly what you want in your job. Start to create a clear vision for the job you really want, no matter how outlandish and unlikely it may seem.

You may experience an urge to limit your imagination. This urge comes from having a limited view of what’s actually possible. You’ll need to give up this limited view in order to create a conversation “for” what you want in a job. You’ll need to set aside your preconceived notions about what is possible and what is not, and work purely from your vision.

Once you have a list of all the factors and characteristics that describe the job you want, and you can actually envision a job that embodies all of those factors and characteristics, you can begin to build a network of interrelated conversations that support your vision.

But first, work on your list and spend some time envisioning a job that embodies everything you want.
