Dear Dr. Dot-Connector,

I’m in the process of interviewing for a new job, but I haven’t told my current employer that I’m leaving yet.  When I have interviews, should I call in sick or request time off?

Thanks, Interviewer

Interviewer,

Squeezing in interviews for a new job can be a tricky thing when you haven’t given notice yet in your current job.  From an objective standpoint, it doesn’t matter much whether you call in sick or request time off.

What matters is that you’re at your best in your interview.  Being at your best means being prepared, managing your integrity, and having complete presence of mind and spirit.  I’m of the opinion that fibs…even small ones…can negatively affect your integrity and your presence of mind and spirit.  For this reason, my coaching is to ask for time off unless of course you actually are sick!
