Continued from Manifesting a Job You Actually Want (Step Two)

Once you have a list of all the factors and characteristics that describe the job you want, and you can actually envision a job that embodies all of those factors and characteristics, the next step is to build a web of interrelated conversations that support your vision.

This is the fun part. This is where the rubber hits the road. Every conversation involves an exchange of ideas through the use of words. The conversations you have with other people about finding the job you want are what will generate new professional opportunities for you.

Therefore, you need to invest some time and energy in talking to people about what you want. You need to have conversations “for” the job you want with as many people in as many places as possible. You have to build a web of conversations that engage other people in some kind of thinking that supports the fulfillment of your vision, and those conversations have to point back to you so that information regarding new opportunities flows back to you too.

This, by the way, is how a resume works. A resume is an exchange of ideas and information through written words that creates a web of conversations about you as an employment prospect, and your vision for a job. The resume provokes thinking on the part of potential employers about whether or not they can assist in the fulfillment of your vision, and it provides contact information so that these potential employers can contact you about possible employment opportunities.

A resume is only one of an infinite range of possibilities for conversation. You can initiate conversations with recruiters, job finding websites, friends, family, neighbors, professional organizations, bloggers, colleagues…the list goes on and on. The conversation you create can be as expansive as your imagination will allow.

The larger the conversation “for” what you want gets, the more opportunities the conversation generates. It may take some time, but eventually, people will start responding to your vision. You will start to make connections. You will start to get calls for interviews. You will start to get job offers. All of this is the result of creating a conversation “for” the job you want.

In case you missed it, I’ll say this very important piece in a different way:

The larger you build the conversation, the more opportunities you will generate for yourself. Manifesting a job you actually want may mean generating a hundred, or even a thousand different opportunities before settling on the one that really fulfills your vision. How large will your conversation have to get in order to generate that many opportunities?

How large a conversation “for” what you want are you willing to generate?
